Introduction to sketching with oils
Art Soc. gives students the opportunity to learn to draw and paint with oils without the pressures of study deadlines and exams. It is a small friendly group with an experienced tutor on hand to guide and advise. We have all the equipment available for a student to try painting without having to buy it first.
There is a charge of £7.50 pounds to students and £10.00 pounds to staff, to cover the materials for the first few paintings. After that, students are encouraged to buy their own equipment because it is better to work with familiar tools and paints and work can be done at home or outside. Expect to spend around £30.00 each, spread over the year for your own equipment. There is no charge for sessions.
Art Soc. was started accidentally about five years ago. The tutor was doing a City and Guilds course 730, (Adult Trainer), and needed a class to teach to be invigilated. He set everything up and bribed or persuaded some students to act as guinea pigs. Things must have gone well because they all asked if they could come back the week after and finish their paintings. Word got around and before he knew it there were classes every Sunday with ten or more students. Now Art Soc. meets Sunday afternoons, Tuesday evenings, and Thursday evenings, and has about 25 members at any one time. Some wane, more join. It’ s very popular with foreign students who find it a pastime more in keeping with their culture.
There is a different evening for Staff, Wednesdays, as many from the University have an interest in learning to paint in oils.
Where and When?
For the time being (for the rest of the summer, at the very least) we meet in the Roland Levinsky Building, room 302.

You don’t need to attend a specific time, or even attend regularly - come along as and when you like.
