Introduction to sketching with oils

‘Drawing is the oldest communication skill known to Homo Sapiens’

Art Soc. gives students and staff the opportunity to learn to draw and paint with oils without the pressures of study deadlines and exams. It is a small, friendly group with an experienced tutor on hand to guide and advise. We have equipment available for a student to try drawing and painting in different media without having to buy everything first. Existing artists are very welcome both to exchange ideas with others and to inspire the beginners to greater things.

There is a single cost of £10 to cover the materials for the first few paintings. After that, students are encouraged to buy their own equipment, because it is better to work with familiar equipment and work can be done at home or outside. Expect to spend around £30 each, spread over the year for your own equipment. There is no charge for sessions. All you need to bring is lots of enthusiasm, and something old to wear and get dirty.

Where and When?

We meet in the Roland Levinsky Building, room 302. Sessions are Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 6pm and Sunday afternoons from 1pm until 6pm. The sessions for staff are Wednesday evenings from 6pm. You don’t need to attend a specific time, or even attend regularly – come along as and when you like.

Christmas Opening Times 2009—2010

Art Soc will not be running from the 23rd of December to the 4th of January, due to the building being closed. Classes will resume as normal starting from Tuesday 5th January.
