Black & White Portraits Outdoors

Saturday 28 September
Royal William Rd - 11:30am - 3 Hours
Plymouth Photography Group
Caleb Williams
Learn how to use natural light to advantage when working on outdoors black & white portraits. This workshop will take place in the historical setting. The old master painters had a special word - chiaroscuro -(meaning light-dark) for the dramatic quality of shadow in portraits. This concept, as it relates to black and white portraiture, will be fully explained. The importance of 'catch lights' in eyes & 'bokeh' (for dreamy, soft backgrounds) will also be addressed, as will the advantage of shooting in "open shade". Portraits will be taken with black and white conversion in mind, but can also be enjoyed in colour as well. The textured, stone walls and arcaded walkways in the venue will offer an atmospheric setting for this workshop!

Autumn Photography in Devonport Park

Autumn Photography in Devonport Park

Saturday 02 November
Devonport - 12pm - 2 Hours
Plymouth Photography Group
Caleb Williams
This workshop invites us to slow down and 'focus' on the world in front of us. Our subject will be the changing face of Devonport as it takes on the gold and copper tones of autumn. We will experiment with perspective and aperture to capture things such as fallen leaves, and the dramatic tonal values of treetops. The workshop will provide deeper understanding of composition and depth of field as we experiment with different styles of shooting. We will create a landscape 'story' - composed from still-life and large ensemble elements. Come and enjoy a photography walk in crisp autumn air and experience this magical season in the park.

I've recently found a passion for painting. I've always loved nature and have taken many photographs over the years on my travels. This was a photograph taken on Dartmoor a few years ago. Painted using acrylics on a 24 x 18 canvas.

This acrylic painting is a representation of a scene I recently encountered on a Spanish road trip. The colours from the Mediterranean sunrise against the hillside and ruins inspired me to pull away from my normal muted palette and embrace the warm tones of this beautiful place!

Title or Location: The Lord of the Skies
The Philippine Eagle is critically endangered. Considered the largest Eagle in the world it has been declared the national bird of the Philippines and was previously known as the Monkey Eating Eagle. Its habit is threatened by deforestation and its numbers are decreasing. I've always loved to see images of this bird since I was a child , in particular its piercing blue-grey eyes. Hopefully it will not dissappear in my children's lifetime.

Title or Location: Lucy
This is Lucy, one of our favorite family dogs. She is the sweetest pooch and loves to ride in the car, windows opened. She is in her glory as her ears catch the wind and almost smiles. I tried to capture her wonderful nature in this watercolor painting. I used very heavy pigment to give detail to her fur. I so love the many styles watercolor allows you to create. It is one of my favorite paintings because, I Love Lucy:)

Title or Location: Adventure Awaits
This scene is from an early morning boat ride in New Hampshire - we had been here a couple of times over the last few years. It was so quiet and the water so still . The early morning fog had not lifted and people were still not stirring. I snapped a photo when I saw this scene with the colorful leaves framing the waiting boats. I knew I would paint this one day. It?s a 24 x 30 gallery wrapped oil painting. It can be seen at the Elizabethan Gallery.
