Winter Light Photography

Sunday 03 March
Devonport - 11am - 3 Hours

Nature has something to offer in every season. In the winter its the stark poetry of trees, the soft light, and the atmospheric shapes of clouds. Winter allows us to compose our images thoughtfully. Shadows and glimmers, the mulch of fallen leaves, the texture of a bare branch: all these things can become strong compositions. This workshop will provide deeper understanding of aperture, iso and shutter speed as we experiment with different styles of shooting. We will create a landscape 'story' - composed from still-life and large ensemble elements. Come and enjoy a photography walk in crisp winter air and experience this magical season in the park.

The old master painters had a special word - chiaroscuro -(meaning light-dark) for the dramatic quality of shadow in portraits. This concept, as it relates to black and white portraiture, will be fully explained. The importance of 'catch lights' in eyes & 'bokeh' (for dreamy, soft backgrounds) will also be addressed, as will the advantage of shooting in "open shade". Portraits will be taken with black and white conversion in mind, but can also be enjoyed in colour as well. The textured, stone walls and arcaded walkways in the venue will offer an atmospheric setting for this workshop!

Nature Photography Meetup

Saturday 25 May

This session will encourage you to get up close and personal with nature. Workshop participants will be shown how to frame their images to maximise detail, pattern and colour. Our setting will be in a park, which is bursting with colourful floral subjects at this time of year. We will learn about being 'intentional' in our photography - looking deeply - as opposed to just snapping. New and intermediate photographers will gain knowledge of how aperture and focal length can be used in combination to create well-composed, vivid shots of nature. Making foreground elements stand out (while turning the background into soft, dreamy blur) will also be explained. If your creative self-expression embraces petals, buds, and blooms this session will be very much for you. Indulge your inner "horticulturist", and spend some time with your camera in blossoming nature !

Title or Location: Winter snow
As we had the arrival of snow this week I thought it would be perfect to create a nice winter scene, this one came out of my mind rather than a reference photo, so it?s of no particular place other than some music, a paintbrush and a blank canvas. I actually only learnt to paint during lockdown so it?s always really cool when I see the finished product and it looks pretty good.

Title or Location: Morning Glow on the Hoe
Smeaton's Tower Lighthouse on Plymouth Hoe is an iconic feature on the landscape. Built in 1759 on the Eddystone reef, it stood as a fully functioning lighthouse for 120 years until it was found that the foundations beneath it were crumbling! So in the 1880s it was brought, brick by brick, to where it stands today! I stood watching as the Sky Arts Landscape Artist of the Year artists encapsulated the essence of Plymouth Hoe and Plymouth Sound in 2019 and wanted to do my own painting of one o

In nature, I wait patiently for just the right moment, one that is different but unique to my subject. It?s those unusual positions during grooming, mating ritual, breeding display, or just being silly. I strive to capture the moment that others miss, don?t see or notice. I?ll then use my photography as reference to create, produce and share an art piece that allows others a glimpse into that secret world of lines, colors and details that I see. This Sandhill Crane fit that bill perfectly.
